Diabetes is becoming common and types that are well known by us are type1 and type2. There are also some categories that won’t fit in these two and next common and the important one is Diabetes LADA (type 1.5 diabetes).
LADA stands for Latent autoimmune diabetes in adult.
Understanding DIABETES LADA:
LADA falls between type 1 and 2 diabetes so it is important to know about both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and also the difference of LADA with them.
The sugar which is obtained from the foods we eat is converted into energy with the help of insulin produced by the pancreas, So if the pancreas produces less insulin or the produced insulin is not used properly then the sugar present in the blood increases and results in diabetes.
In type 1 diabetes the pancreas won’t produce insulin or produce a little amount of insulin which is not enough to convert glucose it to energy in this type patients are advised to take insulin injection to control the blood sugar level.
In type 2 diabetes the pancreas produces insulin and the body becomes insulin resistance and medications are advised to use insulin in the way it has to be.
But the DIABETES LADA falls in between because at the start the pancreas use to produce insulin and later the body needs insulin from external factors like insulin injections due to damage in the beta cells of the pancreas, That’s why it is mentioned as TYPE 1.5 DIABETES.
Diabetes LADA is found in adults more than 30 years of age and it is accounted for a minimum of 6% of cases of diabetes.
Some can develop LADA at the age of 70 or 80.
People who are diagnosed with Thyroid are said to have type 1.5 diabetes.
Family history in which there is a genetic predisposition to type 1 and type 2 diabetes
As the cause of LADA is unknown, although diabetes itself is caused by autoimmune damage by antibodies that destroy the pancreas’ beta cells. However, researchers have correlated that genes may be an important factor of type 1.5 diabetes.
Most of the symptoms are same as type 1 and 2 diabetes
Feeling a lot of thirsty
dry, itchy skin
Tingling or numbness in your hand
Unexplained weight loss
Type 1.5 diabetes is can easily be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes
